Mt. Annapurna Expedition is a climbing expedition in Annapurna massif. The massif is a series of peaks 55 km long with the highest point, Annapurna I, which stands 8091m in altitude. Annapurna I is the 10th-highest summit in the world locating in a spectacular setup. The massif lies at the east of the worlds’ deepest gorge that cuts the Himalayas by the river Kali Gandaki. The deepest gorge at Dana separates it from the Dhaulagiri massif at 34 km west of it.

History

French Expedition led by Maurice Herzog first climbed Annapurna I as first 8,000m peak on 3 June 1950. Later, only after 20 years,  another team succeed on the same mountain summit. The South Face attempt of Annapurna by Chris Bonington’s team in 1970 ascent was a landmark in the history of mountaineering. Besides its fame around the worlds, very few climbers choose to climb this mountain.

Attractions of the region

As the first and largest Conservation area, the Annapurna Conservation Area is led by Project (ACAP) and it protects the entire surrounding and massif of Annapurna within the 7,629sq km. Nepal government established the conservation project in 1986. The Annapurna Conservation Area offers several adventure trekking trails and hiking trails including the Annapurna Circuit. Besides the Annapurna circuit trek, the popular route of Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, and Annapurna Base camp trek are in top choice. The other widely liked trekking routes of Annapurna surrounding are Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek and Khayar Lake treks.

Challenge

Although Annapurna peaks are also the world’s most adventurous mountains to climb, it has additional benefits of occurring in an extremely spectacular setting. Including the Gangapurna and Annapurna South, there are four Annapurna’s in the massif. The South Face of Annapurna is one of the largest and steepest faces in the world. The face is awesome in size with difficulty in climbing. The South Face is 3000 feet higher than the southwest face of Mt. Everest.

The South Face of Annapurna is relatively free of the terrible avalanche hazards that plague the standard routes on the North Face of the mountain. The south face is quite difficult to compare to the north face. Despite the great difficulty, the South Face is a logical route to the summit of Mt. Annapurna. The literal meaning of Annapurna is ‘Full of Grains’ and it is translated as ‘Goddess of Harvests’ in common understanding. In addition to this,  the Hindu Mythology defines the word ‘Annapurna’ as a goddess of fertility and agriculture and even it is called an incarnation of Goddess Durga.

Other peaks of Annapurnas

Annapurna I (7,200m), Annapurna II (8,091m), Annapurna III (7,937m), Annapurna IV(7,555m) and Gangapurna (7455m) and Annapurna South (7,219).
